Civil Music’s New Yorker Kotchy is being released alongside Big Apple dwelling Mike Slott and Falty DL – as well as some serious worldwide talent. Warp/Bleep’s project culminates artists from this side of the pond, with Glasgow’s Hudson Mohawke, Taz Buckfaster and rustie as well as the south’s Skream, Geeneus and Headhunter. Oh and also West coast of America is covered as well with the man himself Flying Lotus, and also Daedulus and Matthew David.

North/South/East/West is culminating in a deluxe package of 14 photo prints and 12 track cd, hand numbered with a limited poster, sounds like a must for any future beat addict.

Don’t forget Kotchy is in the UK this coming week for a very special live event with Little Dragons at the Rhythm Factory, Its on Monday 7th December, what a great festive surprise that will be!

Kotchy is without doubt a pretty unique presence in today’s sonic spectrum. His music is hard to categorise, in fact he touches on so many different styles throughout the 16 tracks on ‘89’ that it’s understandable why he’s being filed alongside the musical geniuses of Prince, Pharrell, Flying Lotus, Hercules and the Love Affair, Aphex Twin, Jamie Liddell Arthur Russell and Beck.

An album in the truest sense, it’s cleverly constructed to be more than just a collection of songs, it will take more than a couple of listens to notice everything that’s brilliant about this album but you will come away wanting more after just one play. Stand-out tracks such as ‘Falling In Love’, ‘Check Out My Keychain’, ‘She Made It Easy’, ‘Sing What You Want’, ‘One For The Money’ and ‘A Superstar’ supply a backbone for Kotchy to venture off one way and return from another. Lyrically, his sense of humor shines through.

blog favorites Kotchy and Yo Majesty’s Shunda K (you remember club action) – Together!!! Both one’s to watch for 09; Brooklyn beat master Kotchy and Yo Majesty’s Shunda K have been getting it on in the studio. What else is going between them or not we have no idea, but by the sounds of their new EP our favorite Lady Loving(?) Rapper MIss K and the highly sought superstar producer Mr K are definitely getting some good lovin. Tracks like this don’t come about without what they so aptly call “Le Passion” that much is plain. The record oozes style. Steamy, sultry and emotive. Tales of modern love pull at your heart strings like big budget Hollywood. Le Passion, Yo! EP (2009) is as energetic and danceable as it is smooth and seductive. Shunda K’s lyrical flow is as tongue twisting as ever, but free from Yo Majesty’s “Kryptonite Pussy” she’s tender and heartfelt. Kotchy’s trademark drums and beats and diverse production make these tracks something special. The combination of Shunda’s hazy lazy, come to bed lyrics and Kotchy’s hushed breathy vocals is in places spine tingling in others tear jerking. Its beautifully sleazy, hyper modern, ultra slick, heart on the sleeve time. The two have already been performing these and other tracks at a few shows in NY but we figure these lost lovers will have to do the long distance thing for a while. Kotchy’s off to the UK and europe with his debut album and live show , while Shunda’s gonna be more than hectic with the Yo Majesty world tour. They’re definitely gonna be ready for some more TLC when they get back together and we can’t wait for the next batch. Maybe its their reminder that we all need the tender touch once in a while.
